About the Session

Special Session: The Necessity and Meanings of UDPMA Designation
The dynamic democratic system in present Korea is the result of constant struggles and sacrifices of people who have fought against militarism and authoritarianism. However, many countries in the world are still suffering from various forms of militarism and authoritarianism and this situation is worsening under the pretext of the Coronavirus pandemic, gravely hampering democracy and human rights. Facing up this situation, the May 18 Memorial Foundation organized sessions in order to cope with the very issue through global cohesion. Experts and activists in and outside Korea in the field will convene at these sessions to examine the issue and to seek the meanings and efficient implementation measures of the project.


특별세션 2: 세계 군사주의와 권위주의 방지의 날 제정의 필요성과 의미 고찰
한국은 군사주의와 권위주의에 대항한 수많은 시민의 투쟁과 희생의 결과로 민주주의를 이룩, 오늘의 역동적 민주사회로 발전하였다. 하지만 세계 여러 나라에는 여전히 다양한 형태의 군사주의와 권위주의가 존재하고 이는 민주주의와 인권의 발전에 크나큰 걸림돌이 되고 있으며 이같은 상황은 코로나바이러스 대유행을 명분으로 더욱 악화되고 있는 실정이다. 5·18기념재단은 이 같은 문제점을 직시하고 이에 대응하기 위해 전 지구적 결집을 통한 대응을 목적으로 본 세션을 준비했다. 따라서 본 세션에서는 국내외 분야 전문가 및 활동가들이 모여 해당 이슈에 대한 현황을 진단하고 이를 해결하기 위한 대책의 일환으로 군사주의와 권위주의 방지의 날 제정의 의미와 추진 방안을 모색하고자 한다.
